The Truth About Admin: Welcome!

Welcome to my site! I’m glad you stubbled across it…or were referred by someone truly amazing, I’m sure. Either way, let’s get to it. I’m going to give it to you straight. The truth about admin is that our admin personnel are undervalued and overworked. There it is. Before you start with the defensiveness or justification, hear me out.

Imagine an admin assistant in an office, all documents neatly stacked on the desk. The windows are wide open and as the owner or manager passes by like a tornado, wind whips through the office. The dust kicks up, papers go flying, alarm bells start ringing and new information comes rushing through the windows. The admin is left in their supervisor’s wake, cleaning up, reorganizing and trying to figure out where to file the new information. I’d love to tell every entrepreneur, don’t be a tornado, but sometimes this is what we love about them. Innovative, creative visionaries can be tornados. They spring ideas on their teams, change their minds and chase shiny objects. They are simultaneously inspiring and frustrating. If you’re the tornado, I won’t ask you to change.

Why are admin undervalued and overworked?

You don’t likely see the work that goes into reorganizing and chasing down urgent information for your next big idea. You don’t hear the conversations they divert from your phone or emails they tackle so they don’t end up in your inbox. When you ask for something, it’s there, effortlessly. But it takes someone with clear processes, purpose and ownership to bring the highest value to your admin team…without you even realizing it.

Your admin become undervalued and overworked when you don’t provide clear objectives and purpose to these roles. Admins become a catch-all…a jack of all trades. They fill the coffee, pay the bills, restock the paper, service the copier, set up meetings, research your questions, track payments, organize files, welcome visitors…the list goes on. So what’s the problem?

These catch-all roles become infinitely stuck with no opportunity for growth or advancement. We can’t live without Sally the Secretary, so there she will stay…forever and ever.

The Truth About Admin

The truth is younger generations are not content being Sally the Secretary for very long. They desire structure and opportunities for advancement. Providing clarity and structure for your admin is not about micromanagement. It’s quite the opposite. Bringing clarity to these roles enables them to work more autonomously and make decisions within their area of responsibility without tugging on your sleeve. Bringing clarity enables Sally to focus on her area of responsibility in a measurable way so that growth and advancement is not only attainable for her, it bleeds over into the growth of the business.

If you’re ready to hire your first admin and need some help defining the role…if you’re tired of getting sucked into the weeds and need structure within your admin team….if you’re ready to grow your business….then I am here to personally welcome you! You aren’t alone and you’ve found the right place.
